GRiDiRON! The Road to John Madden Football

Before Madden taught football, GRiDiRON! made you live it!

Long before John Madden Football made its debut, GRIDIRON! brought hard-hitting simulation, authentic strategy, and the thrill of the game to computer screens everywhere. GRIDIRON! didn’t just play football—it understood football!

It’s 1986. You fire up your Amiga or Atari ST. No motion-capture. No licensed teams. Just pure football — smart, strategic, and unforgiving. While the rest of the gaming world was busy button-mashing, GRIDIRON! was breaking ground.

The game sold well[21] and was awarded Sports game of the year,[22][3] as well as voted as one of the 40 Best Games of All Time by Amiga World.[23] Bethesda founder Christopher Weaver said in 1994 that Gridiron “put us on the map”[24] and In 1995 Weaver said that the game was the best-selling sports game ever published for Atari ST and Amiga.[25] By 1989, the game sold nearly 20,000 units.[26]

“Back in the late 1980s, a bunch of us developers were invited to a laid-back barbecue and some fun game talks — including GRIDIRON! — at Bethesda Softworks’ HQ, which was actually Mr. Christopher Weaver’s house at the time.

“It’s incredible to look back and see just how far Bethesda Softworks has come on its journey.”

This pioneering software is a powerful teaching tool for students, coaches, and fans who want to understand the game beyond the scoreboard. Whether you’re in a high school classroom, a coaching seminar, or learning on your own, GRIDIRON! gives you the foundation to read, analyze, and command football like a pro.

The Thinking Fan’s Football Game

Strategic Decision-Making
Players and students can make real-time coaching calls: time management, player substitutions, 4th-down gambles, and defensive adjustments.

Player & Team Analytics
Use in-game stat tracking to evaluate player performance and team tendencies — perfect for introducing sports data analysis.

Hands-On Learning
Run simulated games to demonstrate key football concepts: zone vs. man coverage, offensive balance, situational awareness.

GRIDIRON! Was the first football sim to take the game seriously, and it still holds up as a cult classic for those who want substance with their snaps.

“GRIDIRON! taught me more about football than my high school coach.”
“It’s Madden with a brain — and it came first.”

When Bethesda and EA Butted Helmets Over GRIDIRON! and John Madden Football.

Long before Skyrim dragons flew and Fallout vaults opened, Bethesda Softworks was in the trenches — not fighting mutants, but battling one of the biggest names in gaming: Electronic Arts.

Let’s rewind to the mid 1980s, the pixelated days when sports games were just learning how to walk — or, in this case, run a slant route. Bethesda, an up-and-coming dev team, was building a game called GRiDiRON! It was meant to be a smart, realistic football sim with physics, strategy, and that extra bit of brainpower most games back then lacked.

Enter EA. Yep, that EA. They were interested in working with Bethesda to create a next-gen football game.

Christopher Weaver – Head of Bethesda said, “Sure, we’ve got the tech,” and handed over a prototype — a working version of their GRIDIRON! engine. EA liked it. Maybe a little too much.

Fast-forward a bit, and EA suddenly backs out of the deal. No follow-up. No collaboration. Just… silence.

Then boom: John Madden Football launches in 1988, looking suspiciously like GRIDIRON! in shoulder pads. Bethesda cried foul and hauled EA into court, claiming EA had run off with their code and playbook.

The result? Bethesda felt robbed, and EA walked away with the beginnings of what would become the juggernaut Madden NFL franchise — worth some mints today and thanks to GRiDiRON! American Football gaming continues to evolve!

Wayne Gretzky Hockey: Learn Through Play

Skate with the Great: Learning from Wayne Gretzky

Wayne Gretzky isn’t just a name in hockey—he is hockey. With records that still stand decades later and a career that redefined greatness, he’s earned his title as “The Great One.” But Gretzky’s legacy goes beyond the rink. In an age where video games spark imagination and classrooms are going digital, Gretzky’s story offers something bigger: a powerful lesson in dedication, strategy, and lifelong learning.

Veteran Canadian journalist Peter Gzowski wrote that Gretzky seemed to be able to slow down time.[151]

Commentators have noted Gretzky’s uncanny ability to judge the position of the other players on the ice—so much so that many suspected he enjoyed some kind of extrasensory perception.[153]

– “Nobody would ever say a doctor had learned his profession by instinct; yet in my own way I’ve put in almost as much time studying hockey as a medical student puts in studying medicine.”[154]

From early mornings on frozen ponds to the bright lights of the NHL, Gretzky combined passion with precision—skills that now echo in eSports arenas and educational platforms around the world. Whether you’re mastering a hockey sim on your console, or learning about teamwork and discipline in the classroom, Gretzky’s journey proves that greatness comes from curiosity, courage, and constant growth.

Amiga cover version. Wayne also participated in the design of the Amiga version. I got a personal peek at the game in-house at Bethesda around its release. 😉

At the time, the ice playfield featured a unique pixel dotting pattern that became more visible as skaters moved around, emphasizing their motion and creating a dynamic visual effect.
