Battle Squadron

This Amiga classic has it all. With a top rating of an incredible 109%. A 2 person simultaneously vertical shooter, when it is best. Super smooth scroll, huge explosions, cloaked alien enemies (predator effect), mesmorising music tracks and sound fx.
Ingame Story:
Attention Commanders: Incoming Earth Defense Fleet message….
Your mission code C61-178DE is to rescue Commander Berry D. Mayers and Commander Lori Bergin and their starship. The E.D.F. inter-track scanner picked up signatures from a huge Barrax alien enemy object moving towards the hollow planet Terrainia. Data indicates that the hollow Planet Terrainia is their homebase and is much feared due to cloaked enemy ships and the deep unfriendly subterranean worlds with frightening alien species.
We have equipped your ships with our new universal ultimate weapon: The NOVA missile.
On behalf of Earth Defense Fleet… Engage and terminate Commanders!

    I had “the bug”:
    The Bug joystick
Although, i always prefered to play battlesquadron with the mouse on the amiga, as i recall.

Hi Conrad, that is sure one spacey looking retro joystick you had there. :) Is that joystick playable without getting a cramped hand? lol

    • Conrad Helgesson (Vakum) says:

I have never used a more ergonomical joystick!!! =) The good thing was that you could rest your arms in your lap while holding it i.e. quite relaxing.
Unfortunately there is something wrong with it now.. “left” stops working sometimes =/ Just because it is “sometimes” it’s even more anoying. It is either the coord where some copper is visible to eye at some places (very broken), or else it’s something inside the bug that has broken, it’s like a maracass when shaking it, even after i take it apart to molecules and buildt together it again .. anyone with spareparts? :)

      Hey,

I’m still playing this awesome game from time to time… on original hardware of course :)

      Amiga rulez!

I was always put off by the ending. I was never sure if it set up a sequel or if it was meant to justify the fact that the game looped right back into the beginning after the end credits.

    • Cope-Com says:

Hi predcon, The game and the story completes entirely with the ending slides. And it is indeed setting things up for a sequel… This is now even clearer on iOS ;-)

      • predcon says:

I’ve seen the slides, at least on the Amiga version (I don’t own an iPad/iPod Touch/iPhone). It’s the part where “you look back and see the whole planet transforming” that bugs me. There was never a game that followed Battle Squadron on the Amiga, or was there?

        • Cope-Com says:

We worked on Battle Squadron II, which was called Aviators. It was unfortunately not finished at the time. Now we however have some further updated plans on a sequel :-)

          • dk says:

I would very much like to see this sequel on the Amiga!!!!! I have no interest in a ps3/xbox360 version as these so called remakes dont have the magic from the original ones (take Alien Breed – my god its horrible). Only the originals are the best :)

hello ; a xbox live arcade version from 2 players sega genesis version would be extra..;.
battle squadron are for me the great genesis smup whit thunder force 3 . .
thank you for this very great game ; d

    • Cope-Com says:

Hi David, Great to hear. Thanks :-) We are working on several new developments, but what comes first still remains to be decided… so always good to get some input…

    • Tr0nd T says:

      +1
Battle Squadron on xbox would be awesome!
I have purchased Speedball 2 and Golden Axe on Xbox Live Arcade and they feel just like the original amiga games. Haven’t tried BS One since I don’t have an iPhone but playing by tilting the phone sounds difficoult. Is the gyro really that precise?

      • Cope-Com says:

Hi TrOnd T, Thanks for that :-) Yes we would be happy to have Battle Squadron on as many devices as possible. Right now the focus is on mobile devices. Regarding the tilt hardware, it is essentially as precise as you could possibly expect. Touch control is however the preferred control method for most players :-)

        • predcon says:

Is the planned method for deploying the NOVA Missiles going to be the classic “hold the Fire Button and move your vessel in a circle”? Or is there going to be some sort of secondary fire button? Or even better, will a player be able to use them just by tapping on the “M” icons on the bottom of the screen?

          • Hi predcon,
Right now you release the NOVA missile on the iOS version by hitting the “M” button. It is by far the easiest method on a smartphone, utilizing instant release of the NOVA missile and thus avoiding player frustration. On a console device one would most likely use a secondary button depending on the setup.
The joystick rotation release on the Amiga was a quick and good way of releasing the NOVA missile. A couple of the most sturdy and popular joysticks back then had only one fire-button :)

As the pictures show all the buttons react as a single all button :)

Battle Squadron and Hybris are my all time favorite Shmups on Amiga. So thanks to you guys to discover the Amiga era again.

So would BS and maybe Hybris released also on Android platform ?
(I think the Playstation Network is also very good Market for Shmups ;-)

    Thanks again and Regards.
    Andy

    • Cope-Com says:

Hi Andy, Great to hear that. Thanks :-) We are continually updating our plans according to user requests and platform potential. And BS ONE on Android is definitely very high on the list. After BS ONE is done for iOS we will decide what the next step will be :-)

  6. kamelito says:

    Hi,

I don’t remember but I suppose that on the Amiga version, in 2 players mode, it was not possible to trigger the bombs for the 2 players, right ? (sprites limitation ?)
If yes then how will it be implemented on the Iphone…I suppose that if its not like in the Amiga version then it could be too easy to finish the game.

    Kamel

    • Cope-Com says:

Hi Kamel, Yes on the Amiga version only one player can fire the “nova-missile” (=smart-bomb) at the time – due to sprite limitations. On iOS it would of course be technically possible, but we will probably keep the game play same, i.e. only one player at a time.

  7. Razak says:

Wooow this is amazing, also Hybris!!! Good work cope-COM! Any Release Dates for this Top Games? Im very excited about them :) they are really a Must buy!

    Regards

    • Cope-Com says:

Hi Razak, Thanks for your interest in both games. That is great for us to hear :-) Battle Squadron ONE is only a few weeks away! For Hybris we are still talking several months.

  8. Cope-Com says:

    Hi skope,

Thanks for your hyper-supportive comments on both Hybris and Battle Squadron – always extra nice to hear from somebody who is a big fan of both games ;-)

  9. skope says:

Incredible game. I was impressed as hell by those cloaked ships back then. Still looks fresh today. Thanx mates.

  10. pete says:

  11. Cope-Com says:

Thank you. It was also such fun to develop. :)

  12. proton says:

Oh boy what a SHMUP ! I always wondered how they get this game on one single disk ???
No need to go to an arcade, when you have this ass kickin game !
